A robust roadmap for faring in times of uncertainty

Editorial to EERA newsletter 02/2020 by Adel El Gammal, EERA Secretary General

Dear readers,

I trust you had a rewarding start of the year and I hope 2020 will be a year of increased collaboration and activity with the EERA community.

It would be useless to expand on the multitude of causes making our common future so unpredictable. Instead, they should be just another incentive to concentrate even more on building a robust and resilient roadmap to implement EERA’s strategy and support its new mission, “To catalyse European energy research for a climate-neutral society by 2050”.

At the occasion of the EERA Extraordinary General Assembly convened last December, creating the conditions for EERA to build such a robust roadmap, the EERA membership confirmed its strong determination and commitment to bring EERA to a higher level of impact.

This roadmap will allow EERA to further bolster the level of collaboration between its members, through increased activity within, across and beyond its 17 Joint Programmes, to support the broader challenge of transitioning our society to climate neutrality.

Building on the world-class expertise of its 17 Joint Programmes, EERA will be investing in building the system level expertise and deepening the complementary disciplines that are required, beyond technology development, to ensure the transition towards a fair and climate-neutral society.

By adopting a holistic perspective to the Clean Energy Transition, EERA aims at becoming the authoritative and trusted advisor to the EU on achieving the targets of the EU Green Deal, eventually delivering a Clean Planet for All.

To achieve such an ambitious target, EERA acknowledges the imperative to reach out beyond its usual frontiers in order to contribute to achieving a true innovation continuum from research to industry to market, also known as “Lab to Fab to App” in reference to the “Report of the independent High Level Group on maximising the impact of EU Research & Innovation Programmes” commissioned by the European Commission and chaired by Mr Pascal Lamy.

EERA recognizes the crucial importance of shaping itself to the imperatives of the new challenges ahead for the European society (and beyond) and stands fully committed to support the EU with leading-edge intelligence on designing fair and realistic global transition pathways to achieve EU mid- and long-term societal targets.

We welcome you to visit our new website www.eera-set.eu that will be regularly communicating on new initiatives of EERA, supporting our common target.
