Our mission is:
- To catalyse European energy research
All our activities contribute to the overall goal to catalyse European energy research, with the objectives defined in the EU’s Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) and its clean energy transition strategy being the guiding principles. EERA assembles around 250 research organisations in the whole of Europe. Their collaboration and definition of common goals is a catalyst for aligning national research efforts mutually and with the EU strategy.
- ...for a climate-neutral society
Today, more than anytime before in human history, the pace of scientific development and scale of technological adoption have been mind-blowing. Despite this, we are collectively failing to curb emissions. Technological development is a key enabler but reaching climate neutrality is calling for actions reaching far beyond technology. It is about how human activity can fundamentally restructure itself towards climate neutrality and how technology can be put at best use to support this transformation. Our mission therefore goes beyond developing technologies – it is to make society climate neutral.
- ...by 2050
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s “Global Warming of 1.5 °C” report makes very clear that climate-related risks to health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, human security, economic growth are projected to increase, even if we manage to limit global warming to 1.5 °C, compared to pre-industrial levels. It also makes clear that we are running out of time, underlining the need to reduce human-made CO2 emissions to below zero within the next 30 years to reach the goals of the 2015 Paris agreement. Our mission stretches therefore to the year 2050, in line with the EU2050 strategy.
