The European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) recently provided its feedback to the Commission’s public consultation on the European Grid Package, which aims to enhance the EU’s competitiveness by helping individuals and businesses to access affordable, secure and clean energy.
EERA welcomes the upcoming Grid Package initiative and proposes several elements to be considered, alongside its white paper on ‘'The crucial role of Smart Grids for the success of the clean energy transition.’’ In the view of the Alliance, further measures focused on simplifying permitting are needed to address complex environmental permitting processes, which limit the expansion of grids.
In this context, EERA recommends:
Furthermore, EERA supports encouraging the sharing of best practices among stakeholders to drive information exchange, innovation and collaboration. Measures to support the development and operationalisation of innovative flexibility mechanisms both for grid users and within the grid itself should also be prioritised.
Grid stabilisation and security is an additional key issue which Europe must tackle by systematically incorporating lessons learned from past incidents like the recent Iberian blackout in policymaking.
EERA also highlights the importance of investing in the upskilling and reskilling of the workforce with future-ready skills, particularly in cybersecurity, where robust policy frameworks, technical knowledge, and supporting technologies must be in place.
