Recently approved project ambitions to become the broadest programme for transnational access to major energy research infrastructures in Europe

RISEnergy, led by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and counting with the participation of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) and several of its member organisations, has been approved by Horizon Europe. The project aims to create a wide European ecosystem to accelerate R&I on clean energy technologies as Europe powers towards reaching its net-zero emissions goals.
Brussels, July 17, 2023 – Following a competitive Horizon Europe call, the Research Infrastructure Services for Renewable Energy (RISEnergy) project has succeeded in the evaluation phase and is now preparing the grant agreement. The initiative, which brings together 69 organisations from 22 countries, will count on a budget of 14,5 mil € and sets out to achieve more efficient, competitive and cost-effective energy systems and devices as well as facilitate and accelerate research at various stages along the value chain, enabling faster time-to-market of individual energy technologies. This will foster broader incorporation of renewables into energy systems.
Within the European Green Deal framework, the RISEnergy project acknowledges the need for further research and innovation to keep the timeline, accelerate innovation and bring results to market. Against this background, it strives to initiate a long-term, coordinated research effort among leading private companies, funding agencies and research institutions with common expertise in energy technologies to identify and promote ways to scale them up within the EU.
The project’s three key activities, namely access to excellent research infrastructure (RI), cross-RI services and proactive innovation management, will be executed through a core Renewable Energy RI Ecosystem, an effort that will be led by the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) in its capacity of Europe’s largest energy research community. As a result, RISEnergy intends to create a large community of research infrastructures offering free access to users and become the broadest programme for Transnational Access (TA) and Virtual Access (VA) ever proposed. As such, it will provide access to training facilities and educational activities and establish a European unique entry point with tailor-made access roads for academics, industry, and SMEs to promote and coordinate international R&I access.
Led by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), a globally recognised research centre of the Helmholtz Association already successfully leading other pan-European projects, most of the organisations of the RISEnergy consortium have a long-term history of cooperating over the years, notably as members of the EERA community, anticipating promising achievements as a result of this new collaborative endeavour.
RISEnergy is expected to kick off at the beginning of 2024 and will last 54 months.
