StoRIES project - Storage Research Infrastructure Eco-System- granted EU funding

Storage Research Infrastructure Eco-System (StoRIES) Project for the LC-GD-9-1-2020 - European Research Infrastructures capacities and services to address European Green Deal challenges - aiming to connect facilities and researchers across the continent, has received approval for funding from the EU.

The StoRIES project, developed within the framework of the EERA JP on Energy Storage and coordinated by KIT, has been granted EU funding under the scope of the European Green Deal Call launched in 2020 by the European Commission. The main technological objectives of StoRIES are linked to energy storage development by providing access to 64 world-class research infrastructures and services. The project will focus on improving materials for devices and optimising hybrid energy systems to make energy technologies more competitive and reduce costs. Moreover, StoRIES will analyse the socio-technical and environmental aspects of new developments and systems and provide training and education on these issues. The project budget is €7 million for the next four years.

In December 2019, the European Commission has presented the “European Green Deal”, a set of policy initiatives aiming at ensuring the EU becomes climate neutral by 2050. These policy initiatives have strong implications for the energy sector, and for the energy storage sector in particular. New energy storage technologies will supply more flexibility and balance in the grid, providing a back-up to intermittent renewable energy and contribute to seasonal energy storage challenges. Above all, the main challenge for energy storage devopment is economic.

StoRIES beneficiaries

To address these challenges, StoRIES project brings together a consortium of beneficiaries like ESFRI facilities, technology institutes, universities and industrial partners to jointly improve the economic performance of storage technologies. Members of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) and the European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE) have a long-term history of co-operating with each other and are establishing the core of this world-class European ecosystem.

The main technological objectives of StoRIES are linked to the energy storage development by providing access to world-class research infrastructures and services, with a focus on improving materials for devices and optimizing hybrid energy systems with a view to make energy technologies more competitive and reducing costs. In addition, StoRIES project focuses on the analysis of socio-technical and environmental aspects of new developments and systems and provides training and education on these issues.
