EERA on the Energy Monitor: Why analysts are so worried about energy security next winter

In an article about energy security concerns in Europe, EERA Secretary General, Adel El Gammal, was consulted as expert.

Adel El Gammal, Secretary General of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) and professor of geopolitics at the ULB (Brussels, Belgium), was asked to give his expert opinion on the persistent energy security concerns in Europe.

In fact, the REPowerEU Policy Package has impressed a sharp acceleration of the domestic clean energy transition as a way to reinforce EU strategic autonomy. Even if this renewed ambition seems to be already delivering promising results, as the share of wind and solar generated electricity in the EU increased in 2022, efforts may be counterbalanced to ensure that “the unprecedented ramp-up in deployment rates [is not] hampered by bottlenecks in the respective supply chains, some of which seem difficult to remove” said El Gammal.

El Gammal added that there are areas, such as the development of the necessary skills, grid reinforcement and permitting that may result in serious challenges in the future. Therefore, EU efforts must be concentrated there if we are to achieve the REPowerEU objectives.
