European Green Deal: opportunities to contribute and timeline

Within the framework of the European Green Deal (EGD), several measures have been published since its launch in December 2019, including the first EU legislative proposal establishing the procedure to reach the climate-neutrality objective in Europe by 2050.

The COVID-19 crisis has had an impact on European Commission working priorities, with several measures planned to be postponed to Autumn 2020 or to 2021. Nonetheless, many activities of EERA’s interest will keep their original timeline, some of them being currently open for consultation to external stakeholders.

Upcoming EGD measures and consultation of EERA interest:

  • European Green Deal Call for proposals under Horizon 2020: currently being discussed between Commission services and Member States representatives, it will be published by September 2020. Proposals will be submitted in late 2020.
  • Open consultation to contribute to the EC impact assessed plan to increase the EU’s climate targets for 2030 to at least 50% and towards 55% reduction of GHG emissions in a responsible way. The Plan will be published in September 2020.
  • National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) currently being assessed to match the level of ambition of the European Green Deal.
  • Open consultation on the Smart Sector Integration strategy, aimed at optimizing our energy system as a whole by creating links between the electricity, gas, buildings, transport and agricultural industry. The consultation is open for feedback until 15 May following the modalities explained at the link above.
  • Strategy on offshore renewable energy, to investigate the potential of this type of energy and define a strategic way forward for its ambitious deployment and integration. It will be published in the last quarter of 2020.
  • Forthcoming consultation on defining an evidence-based methodology to link technology expectations from the 2050 long-term strategy to what is current available. Additional information on the consultation process and its modalities will be shared by the Directorate General on Energy in the coming months.
