The President of EERA on the energy future of Europe and Africa

Nils Røkke, President of EERA, talked about what an EU-Africa cooperation in the field of energy would mean.

In an interview to the US-based media company GreenTech Media, the President of EERA, Nils Røkke, talked about a possible cooperation between the EU and Africa in the field of energy, especially concerning green hydrogen. According to him, a collaboration between the two in the field of energy would bring mutual benefits, enabling Europe to tap into its neighbour’s vast energy sources and allowing African countries to enjoy greater domestic energy access.  “Both Africa and Europe would be in a much better situation if there was a cooperation in the development of renewable energies and renewable fuels such as hydrogen”, stated Røkke. “Not pursuing such a cooperation would mean isolating Africa from taking part in the industrial development of clean energy technologies”, he concluded.

During the interview, the role of North Africa as a possible source for part of Europe’s future hydrogen supply was also discussed. According to Nils Røkke, while it is still early to predict whether it will be possible to realize a renewable hydrogen pipeline across the Mediterranean, what seems clear is that there is a growing view that at least some of Europe’s future renewable hydrogen needs must be met from outside its own borders. On the matter, the EU Commission is already mobilizing industry to put its plans into action, including the launch of a Green Hydrogen Alliance to bring together key stakeholders.
