Coordinating energy research for a low carbon Europe
Today, one week ahead of the COP24 conference in Katowice, the European Commission has adopted a strategic long-term vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate neutral economy by 2050 – A Clean Planet for All.
In a press release, the Commission stated, “The purpose of this long-term strategy is not to set targets, but to create a vision and sense of direction, plan for it, and inspire as well as enable stakeholders, researchers, entrepreneurs and citizens alike to develop new and innovative industries, businesses and associated jobs.”
The Commission assessed eight scenarios for the EU’s future emissions reduction efforts, exploring different technology choices, for example boosting renewables, energy efficiency, alternative fuels such as hydrogen, and electrifying transport and other sectors.
