Coordinating energy research for a low carbon Europe
The 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP24, came to an end on 15 December in Katowice, Poland, with the participating states demonstrating their will to stand by their promises and work on putting them into practice. A few days ahead of COP24, the European Commission had equally demonstrated its will to deliver on the Paris Agreement and intensify the work on a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate-neutral economy by 2050 (“A Clean Planet for All”).
As global CO2 emissions have started to rise again, EERA urges the negotiators on Horizon Europe to put decarbonization at the heart of Horizon Europe and national research and innovation funding programmes. Not just mere promises, but bold actions and drastically increased investments are needed to mitigate the effects of climate change.
